View screenshot >> Terminal feature improved. It is now possible to drive the terminal using a fixed current. This allows you to calculate the DC bias of a capacitively coupled plasma. View screenshot >> Metal Contact. The Metal Contact boundary condition can either be driven with an external circuit or a fixed current. This can lead to a more stable system as well as more robust convergence. View screenshot >> Surface-micromachined accelerometer The Model Library now includes a model for a surface micromachined accelerometer. Combine ray tracing Physics with other physics like structural stresses and heat transport. You can download the latest version of ray tracing software by clicking the Download Version 5.5 button. This will take you to the Product Download Page. Contact COMSOL for assistance in evaluating the software and reviewing pricing. These learning resources will help you get the most from the COMSOL Multiphysics (r) software and multiphysics simulator.

Automated meshing with perfectly matched layer domains The new auto-mesh suggestion applies swept and mapped meshing to domains that have perfectly matched layers. This tutorial video shows Numeric TEM ports. The RF Module now has a Numeric TEM port for transmission lines. Implementation of porous electrodes has been improved using the new core functionality that allows for additional dimensions. This is applicable to the Lithium-Ion Battery interface and Battery with Binary Electrolyte Interface, as well the nodes for Porous Electrode or Additional Intercalating Materials. It is now possible to use radially and concentration-dependent solid diffusion coefficients.

This allows for custom settings to be applied to particles that return to an inlet boundary later. To ensure backward compatibility, older models with Disappear wall conditions are automatically added to the Model Tree. The properties of the media where the rays propagate may change over time within domains and at borders. It is possible to assign various wall conditions at exterior boundaries. This includes combinations of diffuse and specular reflection. The frequency, intensity, and direction of incident rays can affect impedance and absorption.

Check out the release highlights for the latest information. You can also download COMSOL version 5.1 today to get the most current technology in simulations. This software platform allows you to create physics-based simulation models and applications. The Model Builder allows you to combine multiple physical elements in any order, allowing for simulations of real-world phenomena. You can simply choose one of your existing models and create an intuitive interface for your application using the Application Builder. This user interface is created using click-and-drag-and-drop operations. A flexible Method Editor lets you program custom commands. The application’s inputs and outputs can be controlled by you. Your applications can be as complex or simple as your design requires. Fallback Conditions on Inlets: The Inlet node does not override the settings of Wall or Outlet nodes sharing the same selection.

An Accumulator can also be added to an Outlet, Wall, or Axial Symmetry boundary. The accumulated variable is only determined at the boundary and can only be changed by particles interacting with it. This allows for efficient counting of collisions with walls and can be used to calculate the flux of any particle property at the border. An Accumulator, for example, can calculate the momentum flux at a border, which can be used to calculate pressure. Accumulators can be used in conjunction with the Moving Mesh interface so that the geometry can be deformed based on the flux particles onto the surface. All fluid flow interfaces announce the absolute pressure to eliminate the possibility of inconsistent reference pressure definitions within different components. Every interface that uses a relative pressure internally can be set by the user at the physics interface level.

Fractures: The new Fracture feature models heat exchange in fractures using a thin porous media. The Fracture feature allows for the thickness of fractures to be represented in the geometry. It also provides a lumped model that can be used for cost-effective modeling. The Fracture feature allows you to define the fluid and solid parts as well as the flow properties. A flow interface such as the Fracture Flow interface can define the flow.

Spontaneous emission The new optoelectronics interfaces account for spontaneous emission in modeling direct band-gap materials. Tunnel currents There are two boundary conditions: Insulator Interface and Floating Gate. These allow for the modeling of tunnel currents through insulating walls and the accumulation of charge on the floating gate.

The fluid flow interfaces display the Absolute pressure, which is the sum of the relative and reference pressure levels. When required, the Fluid flow interface automatically detects the Absolute pressure and can be easily selected in the Model Inputs sections adjacent interfaces.

When the Multiply force is selected, the Initial phase angle setting will be available. Multi-analysis optimization The new tools that allow for multi-analysis optimization enables the creation of study references. This allows for multi-analysis optimization with multiple optimization studies. You can now choose to stop or continue any optimization solver. New parameter estimation step. This new step simplifies basic parameters estimation and target matching. New and improved optimization methods Constraint Optimization with Linear Approximation is a derivative-free method that can be used to match target matching and basic parameter estimation.

To support shared memory parallelization, the code that computes the view factor of surface-to-surface radiation was improved. COMSOL Multiphysics now has multiple cores, which reduces assembly time for surface-to-surface radiation models.

This option does not prevent all backflow. However, if backflow is detected, it will increase the pressure locally. View screenshot >> Isothermal Domains The new Isothermal Domain feature allows you to model regions in which the temperature is assumed that it is homogeneous. Instead of solving for heat transfer in the temperature field, a global heat equation determines the domain temperature as a constant across a domain. The Isothermal Domain feature can be used in conjunction with all classical domain, boundary, and edge features. A new boundary condition has been added to establish global isothermal domain conditions. You can use the Isothermal Domain feature to determine thermal insulation, convective warmth flux, thermal contact, or ventilation between isothermal domains. View screenshot >> Thin Film The Thin Film feature simulates heat transfer in thin fluid areas.

Each iteration forms linear approximations of the objective and constraint function by interpolation at vertices. A trust-region bound restrains any change to the variables. The new Counter Electrode feature is available in all Electroanalysis products. It takes care of the total charge balance of the cells. This feature is also available for Batteries and Fuel Cells, Electrodeposition, Corrosion Modules. View screenshot >> Danckwerts Incflow Condition An option for Danckwerts is now available in the Inflow function of the Transport of Diluted Species and Nernst–Planck interfaces. You can now specify the Inlet flow direction of the Grille and Fan features. Inlet flow reversal can cause convergence problems or other non-physical solutions.
