XBMC4Xbox, a third-party development spin-off of XBMC is still in active development and support for the Xbox platform. This project was started as a fork from XBMC to maintain a version for the Xbox hardware platform. This project was not initiated by any official members of the XBMC Project. It will also not be supported in any way by the Official Team XBMC. It was created when Team XBMC officially discontinued support for the Xbox branch. This was announced on 27/05/2010. SPMC by SemperPax, a fork XBMC’s media center software for Android, is mainly maintained and updated by Christian Brower (a.k.a. Koying, who is also a member of Team-XBMC on the official XBMC Android. SPMC is a fork of XBMC 13x with minor modifications to suit different Android devices. SPMC can be downloaded directly from all Android app stores including Google Play, Amazon Appstore, and Ouya App Store. This is the main difference to XBMC.

Kodi/XBMC has a flexible GUI toolkit that is a robust framework for its GUI. Its underlying complex graphical layout and design library (named libGUI/Kodi/XBMC) provides a layer of abstraction between the application code, the interface, and allows for extremely flexible dynamic layouts. This makes it possible to create unique skins for XBMC. Skin files are written in XAML using a standard XML basis. This makes theme-skinning and personal customization easy. Neuros LINK by Neuros Technology, an Ubuntu-based set-top device, and media extender that brings internet TV and another video to your television, is pre-installed and includes XBMC Media Center. Myka ION, an Nvidia Ion-based set-top device, is fanless and designed to bring Internet TV and media from your home network to your living room. It comes pre-installed and can be used directly from the main menu with XBMC Media Center and Boxee. DirectX Video Acceleration supports hardware video decoding. However, this enhancement is only available for Windows 7 or later. It uses the DXVA 2.0 API which is not supported by Windows XP. You can also create your own skin and share it with others through public websites. This is used for Kodi skin development and trading.

Imagine a smartphone with all the apps that can be added to it. Kodi offers a growing number of community-driven add-ons. These can all be installed from one official repository. However, third-party developers can also host their own unofficial repositories where add-ons can be added by any user. RasPlex, a Plex-based Linux OS distribution optimized for Raspberry Pi’s ARM CPU, is a forked version of XBMC. Although it is intended to be a third-party client for Plex Media Server (although it can also be used as an independent media player), its primary purpose is to make Plex Media Server more accessible. The release of 1.0.0 in 2004 marked the beginning of the XBMC project. It added more features such as support for iTunes features like DAAP, Smart Playlists, and many other improvements and fixes.
However, it took two years for a native source port to XBMC to be available on the Vu+ Solo SE and Vu+ Solo 2 set-top boxes. (And no XBMC will be available for older Vu+ set-top boxes due to hardware limitations that lack OpenGL graphics acceleration. Third-party firmware images using Kodi/XBMC are being developed for the newer set-top box models by the Black Hole Team and the OpenATV, VTi, and OpenViX teams, all four independent developers of long-popular community-driven firmware images for Vu+ set-top-boxes. Voddler is a commercial service that streams movies and TV programming. It’s similar to Spotify or Grooveshark but for video. Voddler’s media players software was originally based on a fork from the XBMC open-source code. It was released on 1 July 2009. It was updated to 24 February 2010.

Boxee stopped the development of the XBMC fork and replaced it with Boxee TV. Boxee TV uses closed-source software. Boxee was also an official sponsor for the XBMC development program. Kodi can be used with a variety of operating systems and hardware devices designed to connect directly to a television. Kodi works well on relatively weak systems due to hardware video decoding that is common on almost all supported platforms. These requirements do not include any additional hardware required for advanced features such as PVR.
The VDPAU API on Nvidia GPUs, the VAAPI for AMD/ATI Radeon and S3 Graphics, and Intel’s newer Integrated Graphics Processors as well as hardware-accelerated decoding via OpenMAX and ARM NEON on systems that support it. Launchpad has a development version of Kodi/XBMC Linux. It is available as a PPA for Ubuntu Desktop version 8.04 or later. There are also DEB packages for Debian. Many other Kodi remote control apps have been released by third-party developers for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry. While some apps can be used to control Kodi specifically, others can control multiple media center and player apps. Some apps cost money, while others are completely free. The video-player core for video-playback, an in-house-developed cross-platform media player called “DVDPlayer”, was created to playback DVD videos and includes native support for DVD-menus. This DVD-player core has a unique feature: it can pause and play DVD video movies stored in ISO or IMG DVD images or DVD-Video (IFO/VOB/BUP/DVR) images, either from local harddrive storage or network share storage.
When a different group or organization needs to modify the program, forks are often created. These minor changes can be made to support certain hardware or add special features. Marys MS630S, and MS850S set-top-boxes that are PVR-ready and can run Linux-based media players such as XBMC. Mary’s has advertised these devices as being compatible with XBMC. Mary’s PrismCube Ruby is a DVB/S2 twin-tuner high definition DVR-PVR set-top-box that runs XBMC on top of embedded Linux. Unicorn Information Systems in South Korea has produced the nettops Xtreamer Ultra 2 and Xtreamer Ultra 2. Both are based on Nvidia graphics, Intel Atom processors and come pre-installed with OpenELEC software and Kodi XBMC software.
XBMC for Xbox wasn’t an authorized/signed Microsoft product. Therefore, a modification to the Xbox is necessary in order to run XBMC from an Xbox game console. XBMC can be used as either an application or a dashboard. It appears when the Xbox is turned ON. XBMC was developed as part of an open-source software program. It was available on a public subversion repository. Third parties often release unofficial executable builds of the subversion repository to sites not affiliated with the official XBMC Project. Kodi for Windows is available as a 32-bit and 64-bit program on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. Ultra HD and 1080p playback can be achieved on Windows computers using either software decoding on your CPU (if it is powerful enough) or hardware-accelerated video codec.
MIPS, DirectFB, and DRI are all popular architectures used by simple set-top boxes such as digital broadcasting (cable/satellite), boxes, and lower-end digital media players like those built on MIPS architecture chipsets made by Realtek or Sigma Designs. Currently, Kodi port to MIPS is being actively worked upon by several independent development groups. Kodi is an open-source, non-profit software project driven by a community of volunteers. It is not a commercial venture.

The Little Black Box, a Linux-based ARM media player that uses XBMC for its main interface, is a Linux kernel-based ARM multimedia player. Kodi developers made it known via their news section that a Kodi application was available for Xbox One on 29 December 2017. The UWP version will keep the Kodi look, but many core features have been removed or are broken. Although the original XBMC project has stopped developing and supporting XBMC on the Xbox, an XBMC version is still available through the third-party spin-off project “XBMC4Xbox”, which has taken complete control of the development and support for XBMC on the original Xbox. Many mobile apps are available that can be used with Kodi. These mobile apps can be used as remote controls or as companion apps on the second screen. Some apps offer additional information such as metadata about actors and music artists. They also provide links to other works from that person’s collection or online.
Meego TV’s stack offered a GPLv2 compatible OBS Light (openSUSE’s Open Build Service for Clients) based SDK. This derivative fork of XBMC software was used for embedded systems appliance devices. The Linux Foundation, Intel, and AMD founded MeeGo and its Smart TV platform. Boxee Inc. is a startup that created Boxee. It is a freeware, partly open-source software platform, and entertainment hub. Boxee is a commercial copy of XBMC software. Boxee was able to support Windows, Linux, and OS X. The first Alpha version of Boxee was made available on June 16, 2008. The desktop versions will no longer be available. Instead, Boxee Box will be the focus.
Many official ports of XBMC have been developed to work with various hardware platforms and operating systems. XBMC is able to decode high-definition video at 1080p resolutions thanks to the more modern processing power of newer computer hardware. This bypasses the hardware limitations of the Xbox version XBMC. Third-party developers can extend Kodi’s capabilities with many addons. These include screensavers, screensavers, and skins as well as visualizations, weather forecasts, and widget scripts. Kodi developers encourage users to create and submit their own addons in order to increase media content and provide value-added services that can be accessed from within Kodi. An add-on is a piece of software that can further enhance or expand the functionality of a program.
