I believe it can work on files created with the X-H1 and X-Pro2, X-T20, or other cameras that use the same version of X-Trans however it may not be as effective for older sensors or those with more modern versions. In my tests, PureRAW produced four times larger DNG files than original lossless compression Nikon NEF files. The cost of a PureRAW license is thus negligible when compared to the additional storage space… The files get huge and cannot be compressed using RAWSIE and I can’t use it with no noticeable image quality loss. My observations are based upon the limited tests I have conducted with the files I have created. I have not conducted tests with extremely noisy files because I am trying to stay clear of creating these types of files.
With DxO, it is necessary to locate and process to get the “real RAW” by hand without the aid of a catalog. I was even surprised this was not mentioned as a significant drawback in the evaluation… PHOTO-taking equipment gets the most value for money from SOFTWARE. The darkroom software for computers and digital devices gives NEW LIFE, constantly evolving capabilities for “our gear.” The technology is constantly evolving, with our picture to a higher level, or notches, with no requirement for the latest hardware.
Yes, PhotoLab 4 Essential lacks the PRIME / DeepPRIME denoising algorithms, but it’s an extremely comprehensive digital darkroom software. The PureRaw list cost is just a third lower than the complete DxO PhotoLab 4 Premium. If you look at the time below it’s important to keep in mind the amount of time you would have taken to do the same adjustments within your current application without PureRaw Of course.
I was quite surprised by this one, but I believe that DxO PureRAW gives you an advantage in this regard. I’m not likely to use it for every single current or future landscape shot through DxO but I’ll definitely test it for landscapes with high contrast where I want to really push the shadows. It is my opinion that it could be beneficial for wildlife images that show animals in shade, and we are unable to or did not employ fill flash. Maybe DxO can reveal more shadows in feathers and fur in these instances.
Another user on the thread claims that switching to “DxO Standard preset” vs. “no preset” fixed the issue. I’m not sure if everyone’s experiencing the same issue, but for instance, CarVac’s “dreaded pink highlights” on this thread. PureRaw users, more than likely already have another program.
I’ll certainly be creating DxO PureRAW an integral component of my workflow for new telephoto shots made in low-light. The second reason is that PureRAW reduces the noise in photos that result from high ISOs and/or extended exposures.
